I 80 at twilight.

I really do have a love/hate relationship with driving. On the one hand, I love the chance to be alone and thoughtful and sing along to the ipod cranked up uncomfortably loud. On the other hand, sometimes the drives we get here in California are so long and straight and lonely that all you ever want to do is get to the end of it.

Without the distraction of traffic, and the strange clumping and speeding caused by just a few too many cars on the road, what is there to do exactly? Of course some of you are thinking, "Well you drive, you pay attention to the road and you just drive"....but its not that simple. There are stories to think up, soundtracks that need movies and sometimes, pictures that need taking.

I cannot recommend taking pictures while driving, even if it is just with your phone. But the problem is: when else would you take a picture like this? As a passenger your job is entertaining the driver and keeping an eye out for where you can pick up a snack. As the driver, it's all up to you.

This place made me think it was a good setting for a Coen brothers movie. Just full of creepy potential!

the insomnia chronicles, part 1

I've had insomnia off and on (mostly on) since August. Well, actually I've had it since I was 14 (fourteen! What kind of teenager has insomnia? This kind.) But lately it has been more persistent than usual. It manifests itself in me waking up, wide awake, at some time between 2 and 4 am. Mostly, it's really boring. Last night, not so much. I was already awake, trying to decide whether or not I should get up, when I first heard it. A car was careening around the neighborhood, squealing around corners and generally sounding a lot like a bad gangster movie. They were getting closer. And closer. The high pitched whine of the tires as they took corners too fast became louder and louder. Then, just when they couldn't get any closer, the silly hollow sound of a hubcap coming off a tire and bouncing down the street followed by the inevitable crash. It sounded like they hit a parked car as they fishtailed on a corner, then took off. Damn drunks.

I went out for a run this morning and saw the damage. Instead of hitting a car however, they managed to uproot the mail box on the corner and destroy a big planter at the cafe on the corner.

Nicely done.

Today it was the latter.
