The Manhattan Skyline

I'd never been to New York before, so I really did not notice the missing twin towers... until I visited the Statue of Liberty. The National Park Service signs have not been updated since 9/11 so seeing that sign was a striking reminder of where they ought to be.

Things I Learned In Croatia

Part one: There are many ways to flush a toilet

-The pull-plunger
Pretty standard in an old-fashioned kind of way. Pull up on the plunger in the middle of the tank.

-The Victorian
More old-fashioned fun: a cord dangles down from the elevated tank. It's just like you were living in 1888!

-The two-step
Press one side of the panel to flush, press the other side to stop the torrent of water pouring through.

-The key lever
Looks like a key inserted into the side of the tank; press down to start, pull up to stop

-Plastic Fantastic
Big plastic V-shaped panel attached to the wall. In case you're unsure which way the water is supposed to go.

-The Mysterious Metal Disc
Sticks out of the plumbing behind the toilet in an unobtrusive way. Must be pressed.
